Founded in 1861, the Colorado Rangers served as the first statewide law enforcement agency.

The Colorado Rangers Law Enforcement Shared Reserve (CLER) was formed as a statewide government and P.O.S.T. Certified Law Enforcement Agency supporting numerous Law Enforcement agencies and governments throughout Colorado as their police reserves.  CLER operates under the original 1861 agency name of Colorado Rangers with Colonel Ronald Abramson as Agency Chief.

The Colorado Rangers operate their own P.O.S.T. Certified Reserve Police Academy which graduated eight (8) classes through 2019.  Academy Class 9 (2020) has been delayed due to COVID-19.  

Rangers perform their duties without any compensation in order to give back to the communities as well as to support and serve alongisde those who have chosen Law Enforcement as a career.

Prospective Reserve Police Academy Cadets & POST Certified Recruits

It's not a job!  It's an honor.

While all Reserve Police Officers are not compensated with money, payment comes in the form of appreciation and admiration for making Colorado communities safer.  Rangers perform their duties to serve and protect as a way of giving back as well as to support and serve alongside those who have chosen Law Enforcement as a career.

Who is elligible to become a Cadet (not yet P.O.S.T. Certified) or a Recruit (currently P.O.S.T. Certified) with the Colorado Rangers?

Requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Age 21 or older
  • High school graduate
  • US Citizen or certain non-citizens - See this LIST
  • Colorado DL or Colorado ID
  • No felony convictions
  • No P.O.S.T. disqualifying misdemeanors - See this LIST
  • Pass the Police psychological examination
  • Physical examination by your Physician
  • Pass the background investigation
  • Pass initial and final interviews with the Colorado Rangers
  • Receive an offer from the Colorado Rangers
  • If not already P.O.S.T. Certified, graduate from our Academy

If you have a current Colorado P.O.S.T. Certification (Basic or Reserve), you are welcome to inquire.

Not P.O.S.T. Certified?
The start date for Class 9 in our P.O.S.T. Reserve Police Academy was postponed due to the impact of COVID-19.  Class 9 is now expected to begin in the late spring or early summer of 2021 and we are accepting inquiries now.
